U Zagrebu mjeseca listopada 1901.
Viktor Badalić.

1. SLIKA.

(Palača sultanova u Biogradu, Sultanova soba, spojena s trijemom).

Prizor prvi.

Sulejman (sjedi zamišljen).
Levi (dolazi sredinom).

Levi.
Poručio si po me,
O silni padišah;
Po glasu eto tvome
Tvoj smjerni rob ti dođe mah.
  (za se):
Još vazda šuti.
  (glasno):
Care, gospodaru!
Na slugu se ne ljuti,
Koj pozna bol ti staru:
Ti sjediš žalostan,
O, jesi li bolestan?

Sulejman.
Šuti, šuti! Starost ova
   Nikad mene ne okova!

Levi.
Oprosti, silni care! -
   Još oko krepko sjaji,
   A dušu silnu žare
   Prošastih dana događaji,
   Budućnost krasnu kažuć.

Sulejman.
Kaži Levi, iskren budi:
   Koliko još ljeta sudi
   Znanost meni tvoja?

Levi.
To samo Alah zna!
Sulejman.
Ha, ha, ha! Ti ne znaš ništa!
Ili ne znaš, il' se bojiš,
Šta si stao, kô da brojiš
   Čase, dane moje smrti?
   Reci sad, koliko ljeta
   Još ću uživat toga svijeta,
Reci, mogu l' svijet još strti?

Levi.
Koliko sudim ja,
Još deset –

Sulejman.
Deset veliš? Deset?

Levi.
Da, možni care moj,
   Još deset! Ali dalje čuj!
   Mirovat valja tebi,
   Uživat mirno slave,
   Inače mogô ne bi
   Sačuvat vedre glave!
Već četrdeset ljeta slavnih
Po svijetu tvoj se ori glas:
O care, sad je došô čas
Počitku, miru tvome.

Sulejman.
Pokoj, mir i ljeta deset
Nuđaš meni, slugo vjerna!
Mir mi veliš, pokoj? Je li tako, Levi?
      Šta će meni ljeta duga,
      Da proživem kano crv;
      Da mi srcem vlada tuga,
      Žilam da se stine krv!
      Jedno mi je dosta samo,
Al ću radit dan i noć,
Pa kad i ja dođem tamo,
(pokazuje rukom na dženet).
      Slava moja neće proć!

Levi.
Polako, care moj, polako!

 Sulejman.
Starče, šuti! Niti riječi,
Jošte živi stari lav!
Idi brzo, neka dođe k meni
Vezir moj, - nek brzo dođe!

Prizor drugi.

Sulejman
(sam).
Čudno li krvca mi vrije,
Rata mi srce žudi;
Silnije, jače mi bije,
Nadimlje jake grudi.
Sad u boj, neka svijet
Pred mojim drhće jarom;
Sad u boj, sve će mrijet
Pred sviju carâ carom!
   Strepi, o Beču, ti prvi,
   Prvi je udarac tvoj:
   Tebe kad padišah smrvi,
   Lagan je s drugimi boj.
   Diž'te se, junaci, diž'te,
   Vaš vam nek pomogne bog!

Prizor treći.

Sulejman i Mehmed Sokolović, veliki vezir.

Mehmed.
Smjerno čekam tvoje zapovijedi,
   Možni care!

Sulejman.
Na vojnu, na vojnu!
Nemam časa da potratim,
Kratak mi je vijek:
Slavom hoću da pozlatim
Zadnji žića tijek.
Na vojnu! Je l' vojska spremna?

Mehmed.
Sve u redu!

Sulejman.
Namah teci,
Hitro reci:
"Zapovijeda car,
Neka vojska sva
Bude gotova
Danas jošte poć na vraga!"

Mehmed.
Tako brzo zar?

Sulejman.
Tako hoću! Preko praga
Ungarije ravne
   Na Beč gredem,
Da od želje davne
   I taj bedem
Srušim, satrem, spalim

Mehmed.
Mis’o tvoju hvalim!
   Silan ti jesi care velji,
   Stavna volja tvoja:
   Zapreke nema tvojoj želji,
   Vojska žudi boja.
   Dvjesta je tisuć' vojske čile
   Spravno poći s tobom.
Tko da ne strepi s takve sile,
Sav svijet bit će ti robom!

Sulejman.
Gdje su vođe ini?

Mehmed.
Vani stoje.

Sulejman.
Tko sve?

Mehmed.
Mustafa od Bosne paša,
Ali Portuk Ibrahim,
S njimi silni Begler-beg.

Sulejman.
To je nada naša!
Idi namah, reci im:
Pobjede se vije stijeg,
Na vojnu je poć.
Idi, zovni sve!

Mehmed
(odlazi.)

Sulejman (sam.)
Vraća mi se stara moć,
   Mlada krvca vre:
Samo sada ili nikada,
Sad il nikad Beč je moj.

Prizor četvrti.

Sulejman. Mehmed. Mustafa. Ali Portuk. Begler-beg. Levi. Vojnici.

(Ulaze, pošto se je otklonio zaslon).

Vođe.
Nek Alah prati vijek tvoj svaki hod,
Nek slavom cvati svak tvog djela plod;
Ti nas povedi sad slavni u boj,
Nikog ne štedi nas, rob svak je tvoj!

Zbor
(opetuje).
Nek Alah prati vijek tvoj svaki hod,
Nek slavom cvati svak tvog djela plod;
Ti nas povedi sad slavni u boj,
Nikog ne štedi nas, rob svak je tvoj!

Vođe.
Slava ti care, oj Alah nek te brani,
Vodi nas, kamo znaš, vođa si nam znani!

Zbor
(opetuje).
Slava ti care, oj Alah nek te brani,
Vodi nas, kamo znaš, vođa si nam znani!

Sulejman.
Zdravo da ste, vjerne sluge,
Druzi moje slave! Da ste zdravo!

Svi.
Osloni vijek se na nas,
I vodi nas u boj, u smrt.

Sulejman.
Ne! ne u smrt - na pobjedu!
   Pamtite li uvredu
      Njemačkoga cara?
Platit će mi danak već
   Ona guja stara,
Kad mu otmem Beč!

Svi.
Na Beč, na Beč nas vodi,
To srcu našem godi.

Sulejman.
Neka bude! Ali prije
Nego na Beč skorim,
U Ugarskoj tvrđe dvije
Hoću da pokorim:
   Siget prvi -

Mehmed.
U Sigetu je Zrinjski!

Sulejman.
Šta Zrinjski? Tko to veli?

Mehmed.
Junačina je on!

Svi.
Junačina je on!

Sulejman.
Šta Zrinjski? Ja sam Sulejman -

Levi.
Care naš!

Sulejman.
I jesam car vaš.

Mehmed.
Dok silni Hrvat taj
Životom Siget brani,
Uzet ga nećeš, znaj,
Ti Sigeta se kani.

Svi.
Ti Sigeta se kani,
Na Beč nas ravno vodi!

Sulejman.
Ha! Vi ste velikani,
Kijem svaki vjetar škodi!
Ja hoću Siget! Zrinjskog hoću!
U boj vas vodim! Sad u boj!

Svi.
Nek Alah prati itd.

Sulejman.
Svi složno hajdmo, na Siget valja poći;
Past će on, past će Beč ispred naše moći.

Svi (opetuju.)

Act I

Sultan’s palace in Belgrade, Sultan’s quarters, connected to porch/portico.

Scene 1

Suleiman (sitting in thought).
Levi (enters to center).

Levi
You summoned me,
O mighty padishah;
By your voice
Your humble slave comes at your beckon.
   (to self):
Still he sits silent.
   (loud):
Sultan, Master!
Do not be angry at your servant,
Who understands your old illness:
You sit sorrowful,
Oh, are you sick?

Suleiman
Quiet, quiet!
Old age does not shackle me.

Levi
Forgive me, mighty Sultan!
Your eye still shines brightly,
And your soul still strongly burns.
Events of the past  days
Speak of a wonderful future

Suleiman
Tell me Levi, be honest.
How many summers does
your science judge I have?

Levi
Only Allah knows that!

Suleiman
Ha, ha, ha! You know nothing!
Either you don’t know, or are afraid,
Why stopped, as if counting
time, days to my death?
Say now, how many summers
Will I enjoy this world
Speak, can I still crush this world?

Levi
As I judge
Still ten

Sulejman.
Ten you say? Ten?

Levi
Yes, my mighty Sultan,
Ten more! But take heed!
Rest is important for you
Enjoy tranquil pleasures
Otherwise yourwon’t be able
To save your precious head!
Already for forty glorious years
Around the world your voice resounds:
O Sultan, now has come the time
For rest, your peace.

Suleiman
Rest, peace and ten more summers
You offer me, faithful servant!
Peace you tell me, rest? It that it, Levi?
What do I need long years for
To live like a worm
That sorrow rules my heart,
That blood clots in my veins!
One is all I need,
But I will work night and day,
And when I come there
(his hand pointing to paradise)
My glory will not leave!

Levi.
Slowly my Sultan, slowly!

 Suleiman.
Old man, quiet! Not another word,
The old lion still lives!
Go quicly, may come to me
My Vizier, may he come quickly!

Scene 2

Suleiman
(solo)
Strange how my blood boils,
War my heart craves for;
Forcefully, more strongly it beats,
Fills my strong chest.
Now into battle, may the world
Quake before my charge;
Now in battle, all will perish (fall)
Before the emperor of emperors!
Tremble, o Vienna, you are first,
Yours is the first strike:
When the padisha crushes you
Easy will be further battles.
Rise up, heroes, rise,
May your God help you!

Scene 3

Suleiman and Mehmed Sokolovic, the Grand Vizer[1]

Mehmed
Humbly I await your orders,
Mighty Sultan!

Suleiman
To war! To war!
I have no time to waste,
My life is short:
With glory I will gilt it
The last steps (course) of life.
To war! Is the army prepared?

Mehmed.
Everything is ready!

Suleiman.
Go now (At once, immediately
Quickly tell them:
"The sultan orders,
That all the army
Be ready
Today we march on the devil! "

Mehmed.
Why so quickly?

Suleiman.
That is how I want it!
Across the threshold, Hungary’s plains To Vienna I go,
To fulfill an old desire
And those ramparts
Known down, pulverize, burn .

Mehmed.
Your thoughts I applaud
Mighty you are great sultan
Your will is my command.
Obstacles are none to your wishes
Your army craves battle.
Two hundred thousand strong is your army
Ready to march with you.
Who does not fear such power,
All the world will be your slave!

Suleiman.
Where are my captains now?

Mehmed.
Outside.

Suleiman.
Who all?

Mehmed.
Mustafa pasha from Bosna,
Ali Portuk Ibrahim,
With him the strong Beyler-bey.

Suleiman.
That's our hope!
Go on, tell them:
The victory flag waves,
Into battle we take it.
Go, fetch them all!

Mehmed
(exits)

Sulejman
(solo)
My old strength returns to me,
 Young blood flows:
Either now or never,
Now or never will Vienna be mine.

Lead us where you will, our respected leader!

Choir
(repeats).

Lead us where you will, our respected leader!

Suleiman.
Greetings, my faithful servants,
Compatriots of my glory! Be welcomed!

All.
Place your trust in us,
And lead us into battle, to death.

Suleiman.
Not! Not to death - to victory!
Do you remember the insult
Of the German Emperor?
My tribute will pay
That old snake,
When I take Vienna from him!

All.
To Vienna, lead us to Vienna,
That's where our hearts yearn for.

Suleiman.
So it will be! But first
Before onto Vienna I go,
In Hungary, there are two forts
I wish to humble (take, conquer)
   Siget is the first -

Mehmed.
In Siget is Zrinski!

Suleiman.
What is Zrinjski? Who says that?

Mehmed.
He is a hero (lion-hearted warrior)!

All.
He is a hero!

Suleiman.
What is Zrinjski? I am Sulejman !

Levi.
Our sultan!

Suleiman.
Yes I am your sultan.

Mehmed.
While that powerful Croat
Defends Siget with his life,
You will not take it, know,
You should avoid Siget.

All.
You know avoid Siget,
To Vienna direct lead us!

Suleiman.
Ha! You are greats,
Whom every wind harms!
I want Siget! Zrinjski I want!
Into battle I lead you! Now into battle!

All.
May Allah always follow your every step,
May glory bloom in everything you do.
Lead us now into glorious battle,
Spare no one, we are all your slaves!

Suleiman.
All together let’s go, to Siget we must go[2];
Siget will fall, Vienna will fall before our might.

All   (repeat).

II. SLIKA.
(Dvorana u gradu Sigetu.)

Prizor prvi.

(Jelena i Juranić. Kako se digne zastor, vidi se, da Juranić hoće da otiđe; Jelena ga zadržaje).

Jelena.
Ah kamo, dragi?
Ti ode zar;
Gdje 'e pogled blagi,
Gdje ljubve žar?

Juranić.
Oprost', oprosti mila,
Na posô goni sila!

Jelena.
Još nikad takve riječi
   Iz tvojih ne čuh ustâ;
Ah kako tužno ječi
   I boji grud se pusta.

Juranić.
Umiri se, ja odoh,
Na skoro pak ću doć.

Jelena.
Ti prije dan si dao
A sad mi daješ noć,
   Oj kako brzo mine
   Života krasni dan,
   A za njim guste tmine
   Povlače grozni san.

Juranić.
U dvoru mene zovu! Zbogom -

Jelena.
O ne idi, ne idi! Zar više
   Ne ljubiš mene ti?

Juranić.
Za tebe mi duša diše,
   Srce šapće: ti, ah ti;
Dvije s' u jednu dušu sliše,
   Ta smo jedna duša mi.

Ti jedina, izabrana
   Danica si žiću mom:
Ti si radost mojih dana,
   U tuđinstvu ti moj dom.
      (zagrlio ju).

Jelena.
Kako li krasne
   Kako li jasne,
Riječi su meni te

Juranić
(trgne se),
Jur čujem svoje čete glas -
   Zbogom, dušo!

(poljubi ju i ode brzo).

Jelena
(sama).
On ode! Bože, čemu
Požurit mu se valja?
     (ide k prozoru).
Na konja sjeda; poput munje
Sa četicom se krenu!
Ah šta će opet biti,
Zar vijek će krv se liti,
I zavijek trajat boj?

  (Romanca).

   Gdje na tvrdu
Stancu-brdu
Stari stoji Zrinjski grad,
   Tamo mlada Duša rada
U Hrvatsku leti sad.

   Moje sreće
   Prvo cvijeće
Krasno mi je cvalo tu:
   Ljubav sveta
   Mladih ljeta
Obuze mi dušu svu.

   Ali tada
   Iznenada
Bojne trublje jeknu jek!
   Sreća minu,
   Ljubav zginu,
A ja tužna tužim vijek.

Prizor drugi.

(Dok Jelena, stojeći pri prozoru, pjeva, ukaže se s lijeva ulaza mati joj Eva.)

Jelena i Eva.

Eva.
Šta je, drago dijete?

Jelena.
Ništa, majko, ništa.

Eva.
Suzu vidim u tvom oku:
Kaži majki sve!

Jelena.
Ništa dobra! Slutim,
Da će težak snać nas jad.
Baš je sada ovdje bio -
   Hladan kano led.

Eva.
Tko je bio?

Jelena
(pada joj o grud.)
Ah, Juranić!

Eva.
Ne boj mi se, kćeri mila,
   Njega valjda služba zove.

Jelena.
Služba da! Al teška služba:
   Na nas ide Turčin klet!

Eva
(vidi gdje Zrinjski ide).

Ne cvijeli više! Eto oca:
Ne bih rada, da ti suzu vidi.

Prizor treći.

Jelena. Eva. Zrinjski
(dolazi s desna).

Zrinjski.
O majko draga, mila sestro,
Po cijelom gradu tražim vas:
Nek riječ vas moja sad ne smete,
Jer neizvjestan još je glas.

Eva.
Koji glas? Sve reci!

Zrinjski.
Još ne znam kaj je,
Al čekam vijesti svaki čas;
Jer vele, sultan da je baš
Na vojnu pošô sam.

Jelena.
Majko mila.
Pogibelj prijeti nam!

Eva.
Misliš, Zrinski, da će na nas
   Sultan krenut?

Zrinjski.
A nene To sultan činit neće.

Eva.
S tobom dijelim radost svaku,
Ti da brigu nosiš sam?
Sve mi reci: u tom mraku
Istine mi godi plam.

Zrinjski.
Znam te, majko!
Kad sultan na boj kreće,
Na Siget kreće on.

Jelena.
Šta? Na Siget? Bože!

Zrinjski.
Ti budi majke vrijedna,
   I ocu mila kći!

Prizor četvrti.

Pređašnji. Alapić (sredinom).

Alapić.
Bane, novu nosim vijest!

Zrinjski.
Govori! Nek i one čuju!!!

Alapić.
Iz Pečuha glasnik javlja,
Da se na boj sultan spravlja
S dvije sta tisuć ljudi;
Stoga, bane, spreman budi;
   Sultan na nas grede.

Zrinjski.
Junaci moji vrijede,
   Hrvati vijek su prvi:
Za dom, za rod ne štede
   Prol'jevat svoje krvi!

   (obrne se ženi i kćeri).

Umiri kćerku, ženo;
Još Juranića čekam,
Da čujem njegov glas.

Alapić
(pogleda kroz prozor).
Evo ga, kako se žuri!

Jelena.
Sini mi, sunašce, sini,
Tamnu rasprši mi noć,
Sa srca nevolju skini,
Dođi o dragi, o dođ!

Eva.
Rasti, cvati, materina diko,
Bog će dati, da mi sretna budeš.

Prizor peti.

Pređašnji. Juranić
(dolazi s Paprutovićem nekoliko časnika.)

Zrinjski.
Govori, šta je?

Juranić.
U boj, u boj, mač iz toka, bane!

Paprutović.
Jur pređe Dravu Mehmed-beg.

Ostali časnici.
Sela nam pali,
Gradove ruši u prah;
Srce si kali,
Zadaje trepet i strah.

Juranić.
Daj mi četu hrabrih konjanika,
Da ukrotim toga obijesnika.

Jelena.
Oh, tužnoj meni!
       (pada majci na grudi).

Juranić.
Raduj se sa mnom, o dušo,
Pasti će kleti naš vrag;
Mnogoj u bitci sam kušo
Pogani smesti mu trag.

     (Okrene se Zrinjskomu):

Bane, dugo mučah ja,
U srcu tajnu nosim:
Danas neka otac zna,
Milu da kćerku prosim.

Nisam ja bogata roda,
Ne prati tašta me čast:
Čast mi je - bojna sloboda,
Imanje - mača mi vlast.

   Desnicu domu i vjeri
   Zavjerih za vijek taj:
   Srce pak miloj ti kćeri:
Daj mi ju, oče, ah daj!

Zrinjski.
Sinko moj, - znade bog,
   Šta srce moje ćuti:
   Za vas sve - ljubezne,
   Da sreći vašoj sluti.

Svoj blagoslov ću tebi dat
I kćerku svoju s njime,
Kad sretno ovaj mine rat,
Kad slavno stečeš ime.
Ti domu se oduži,
I mačem nju zasluži!

Juranić (potegne sablju).
Sabljo moja, gujo ljuta,
Vodi me u sveti boj!

Jelena.
Pođi, dragi, sretno -
Nek te čuva mili bog!

Zbor.
Pođi, sretno dođi,
Nek te čuva mili bog!

(Juranić odlazi sa časnici. Jelena majci na grudih. Grupa.)

ACT II
(Hall in the city of Siget.)

Scene 1

(Helena and Lorenz. As the curtain rises, it is obvious that Lorenz wants to leave but Helena holds him back).

Helena
Where to, my dear?
Are you going to;
Where's the looks are soft,
Where love burns?

Lorenz
Sorry, forgive me my dear,
To my duty I must go!

Helena
I’ve never heard such words
Come from your lips;
So sorrowfully they echo
And fill my heart with fear.

Lorenz
Settle down, I must go,
But soon I will return.

Helena
Recently you gave me the day
And now you give me the night,
Oh how quickly passes away
Life’s wonderful day,
Is followed by thick darkness
Attracting terrible dreams.

Lorenz
Into the court I am summoned! Goodbye -

Helena
Don’t go, don’t go! No longer
Do you love me?

Lorenz
For you, my soul breathes,
Heart whisper: for you, for you;
Two souls merge into one,
We're now one soul.

You are the one, my chosen
The morning star of my life:
You are the joy of my days
In the wilderness my home.
      (hugs her).

Helena
How so beautiful
How so clear,
Those words are to me.

Lorenz
(pulls away)
I can hear my troop’s call
Goodbye, my dear!

(kisses her and runs of quickly).

Helena
(solo)
He goes! God knows into what
So import he must hurry?
     (goes to the window).
He mounts his horse; like lightning
Charges off with his troops!
Oh, what will be?
Will forever blood be spilled,
And forever continue this war?

  (Romance).

Where on the had hard hilltop
Stands old Zrinjski town,
There a young soul eagerly
Into Croatia flies now.
Now flying to Croatia.

My happiness
First flowers
Wonderfully blossomed for me there:
Holy love
Years of my youth
My sould soothes.

But then
Suddenly
The call from the horns of war echoes!
Happiness fades,
Love is lost,
And I, in sadenss, blame (accuse) the age.

Scene 2

(While Helena, sitting at the window, sings, from the left side appears and enters her mother.)

Helena and Eva.

Eva
What is it my dear child?

Helena
Nothing, mother, nothing.

Eva.
I see a tear in your eye:
Tell your mother everything!

Helena
Nothing good! I suspect,
That a terrible grief will find us
He was just here,
Cold as ice.

Eva.
Who was here?

Helena
(falls into Eva’s arms/bosom.)
Oh,Lorenz!

Eva.
Do not be afraid, my daughters,
Undoubtedly, duty calls him.

Helena
Duty yes! But a heavy duty:
The accursed Turks marches on us[3]!

Eva
(sees where Zrinski goes).

Do not cry anymore! Your father arrives:
I do not want him to see your tears.

Scene 3

Helena. Eva. Zrinski
(enter from the right).

Zrinski.
Oh my dear wife, my sweet child,
Across the whole town I search for you;
Don’t let my words alarm you now,
Because the news is still uncertain.

Eva.
Which news? Tell us all!

Zrinski.
I still do not know what it is,
Eagerly I await the news;
They say the sultan has
Just started a new military campaign.

Helena
Mother dear.
Danger threatens us!

Eva.
Do you think, Zrinski, that
The sultan will move on us?

Zrinski
No, no, the sultan will not do that.

Eva
With you I share my every joy,
Why carry this worry (burden) alone?
Tell me all: in this darkness
Truth will be my light.

Zrinski.
I know you, wife!
When the sultan goes to war,
Onto Siget he marches.

Helena
What? To Siget? Oh My God!

Zrinski.
You be worthy to your mother,
And father's dear daughter!

Scene 4

The former. Wulf (middle).

Kaspar
Commander, I bring new news!

Zrinski.
Speak captain! Let them also hear !!!

Kaspar
From Pécs the messenger reports,
The Sultan marches to war
With two hundred thousand soldiers;
Therefore, commander, be ready;
Sultan advances on us.

Zrinski.
My heros are brave (worthy),
Croats always the best (true):
For a home, for brethren not afraid
 To spill their blood!

(turns to his wife and daughter)

Wife, calm down our daughter;
I'm still waiting for Lorenz,
To hear his news.

Kaspar
(looking out the window)
There he is, how he hurries!

Helena
Oh shine, my sun, shine,
Scatter the dark night,
Remove all troubles from my heart,
Come, my dearest, come!

Eva.
Grow, blossom, your mother’s pride and joy,
God will provide, that you will be happy.

Scene 5

The former. Lorenz
(comes with Wulf and several officers.)

Zrinski.
Speak, what is it?

Lorenz
Into battle, into battle! Draw your sword from the scabbard, Count!

Wulf.
Mehmed-bey has crossed the Drava River.

Other officers.
They are burning our villages,
Cities they demolish into dust;
His heart he tempers,
Spreading terror and dread.

Lorenz
Give me a squad of brave horsemen,
So that I tame his arrogance.

Helena
Oh, woe to me!
 (falls onto her mother's bosom).

Lorenz
Rejoice with me, my darling,
Our accursed enemy will fall;
In battles I tried many things,
To wipe the pagans from their path.

(Turns to Zrinski)

Count, for long I have been silent,
In my heart I carry a secret:
Today, a father should know,
I want to ask your daughter’s hand.

I am not from a rich family,
Family name doesn’t give me honor:
My honor – is from the freedom fight,
My estate – is the authority of my sword.

My right hand to home and faith
Pledged is to the end of my life:
My heart is to your dear daughter:
Give her to me, Father, I beg!

Zrinski.
My son, God knows,
What my heart feels:
For you both - beloved,
To find your happiness.

My blessing I will give to you
And my daughter with it,
When this war happily ends,
When you win an honorable name.
To your homeland fulfill your duty,
And win her with your sword!

Lorenz
(swinging his sword)
My swordr, angry viper,
Take me into this holy war!

Helena
Go, my dear, good luck -
May God keep you safe!

Choir
Go, my dear, good luck -
May God keep you safe!

(Lorenz goes with the officer,
Helena to her mother’s bosom.  Group.)

Naša dika, naša čast,
Naše milje, naša slast,
Neka živu slavni vijek!
   Hrvat umije sjeć:
Straha ne sna pred dušmaninom on;
   Slavu znade si steć,
Slavnu boju on je navijeke sklon.

   Alapić i Juranić
Živili, živili na vijek!
(dolazi Eva i Jelena)
Sad, junaci, vam na slavu
Igrat ćemo bojnu igru.

Juranić.
Tako, braćo, napred samo!

Alapić.
Bojnu vježbu cijenit znamo.

Prva polovina zbora.
Prvi vođa - koji prvi zgodi!

Druga polovina.
Drugi vođa - koji drugi zgodi!

[Gađaju kopljem u nišan kroz veliki prsten.]

       (Prvi hita, - ne pogodi.)

Zbor.
Ništa!

       (Drugi hita, - ne pogodi.)

Zbor.
Ništa!

       (Treći hita, - ne pogodi.)

Zbor.
Ništa!

       (Četvrti hita, - ne pogodi.)

Zbor.
Ništa!

       (Peti hita - i pogodi.)

Zbor.
Živio!
   Evo prvog vođe nam,
   Veselo sve - haj, hoj!
A sad drugi hajd na red!

       (Šesti hita, - ne pogodi.)

Zbor.
Ništa!

       (Sedmi hita - ne pogodi.)

Zbor.
Ništa!

       (Osmi hita - i pogodi.)

Zbor.

Živio!
   Evo drugog vođe nam,
   Veselo sve, haj, hoj!

       (Priređuju se za igru.)

Zbor.
   Hrvat umije sjeć:
Straha ne zna pred dušmaninom on;
   Slavu znade si steć,
Slavnu boju on je navijeke sklon.

       (Igraju bojnu igru.)

Zbor.
Pobjeda! Pobjeda!

       (Kad se svrši igra, pjevaju.)

Zbor.

Hrvat umije sjeć, itd.

   Alapić i Juranić.
   Živili, živili na vijek!

Prizor drugi.

Pređašnji. Zrinjski (dolazi svečano odjeven i oružan.) Paprutović.

Zbor.
Živio nam svijetli ban!

Zrinjski.
Vi, braćo, sa mnom!
Bog daj, uvijek kano danas
Veselje nek se ori s pobjede.
(obrne se Alapiću i Juraniću, te se rukuje s njimi.)

A komu slava toga dana,
Već hrabrim vođam mojim?

Alapić.
Ne meni, bane, - ne,
Već Juraniću slava.

Juranić
(pokazuje na Alapića.)

U boju on je bio sve:
Bješnjaše poput lava.

Zrinjski
(obrne se svim vojnikom.)

Vi znate, braćo, vidjeste i čuste,
Da sultan sam na Siget ide:
Povijedat ništa neću;
Jer znam, da j' vjera tvrda.

Zbor.
Jest vjera tvrda, bane!
Dok je nama na ramenu glava,
Turčin grada svojim zvati neće!

Zrinjski.
A bit će boj na život i na smrt!

Zbor.
Nek bude, bane, vraga ćemo strt!

Alapić.
Ukloni kćer i ženu, daj ukloni
Iz Sigeta! U Beču nek pri kralju
Za vrijeme rata budu!
Vojevat ćemo lakše bez njih.

Juranić.
Al ljepše ne!

Eva.
Nikad; nikad!
Pa bilo što mu drago, -
Ja ostajem uz muža svog:
Gdje njemu grob, i meni tu nek bude!
Ah Zrinjski, ne slušaj te ljude,
Prem vjerne tebi. Ja ostajem!

  (obrne se kćeri:)
      A kćerka moja, rumen cvijet,
      Uz zaručnika svoga:
Il' živjet s njime ili mrijet,
      Po volji jakog boga.

Juranić (Jeleni):
Vjerne su ti grudi ove,
Tebe štiti ovaj mač:
Bog će dati sreće nove,
I utišat gorki plač.

Jelena.
Ko o suncu koplja rose
O tebi mi život sja;
K tebi mene želje nose,
Uz tebe mi sreća sva.

Eva
(Zrinjskomu):
Ah vidiš, mili mužu,
Junačkog' srca rod.

Zrinjski.
Sad istom ćutim, da sam Zrinjski!
   O ženo, dijete moje,
   Vi ostajete uz nas.

Jelena i Juranić.

Ko o suncu i t. d.

(Eva i Jelena odu u grad).

Prizor treći.

Pređašnji bez Eve i Jelene.

Zrinjski.
   Junaci, braćo!
Ma gdje se Hrvat s Turci bije,
   Za dom se bori svoj;
I gdjegod Hrvat krvcu lije,
   Slobode bije boj.

  (vadi pismo).

Od kralja stiže pismo:
   Poručuje nam lijepo,
Da Siget dotle hrabro
Držimo, dok bi njemu
   Moguće bilo skupit
   Sve svoje čete.

Zbor.
Živio kralj!

Zrinjski.
Ko svjesni borci, smjelo i veselo
   U sveti hajdmo boj - u smrt!

Zbor.
U sveti hajdmo boj - u smrt!

Zrinjski.
Pa ako padnem prije ja,
   Tu Alapić je, četnik vaš,
A tada vođa, - njega ćete slušat!

Zbor.
A tada vođa, - njega ćemo slušat.

Zrinjski.
Al prije nego izginemo,
Zakunimo se bogu velikomu:

(Stupa napred i potegne sablju. Oko njega časnici i vojnici.)

Zrinjski.
Tako meni boga velikoga
Braniti ću Siget svojom krvlju;
Ostavit vas nikad, braćo, neću,
Dok u meni živo srce bije!

Zbor.
Dok u nama živo srce bije!
   Tako nam boga velikoga
   Branit ćemo Siget svojom krvlju;
   Ostavit te nikad, bane, neć'mo,
Dok u nama živo srce bije!

Glorious battle always ready for.
Kaspar and Lorenz
Live! Long may you live!

Scene 2

The former. Wulf.
Zrinski (comes dressed and armed.)

Choir
Long live our glorious Count!

Zrinski.
You, brethren, with me!
God give, always as today
Let our joy be heard in victory!

(turns to Kaspar and Lorenz and shakes their hands.)

And to whom the glory of this day,
Who is my brave captain?

Kaspar
Not me, Count, no,
Lorenz receives the glory.

Lorenz
(pointing to Kaspar)

In battle he was all:
Ferocious as a lion.

Zrinski
(turn around to all the soldiers.)

You know, brethren, you’ve seen and heard,
That the Sultan himself comes to Siget:
I do not need to say anything;
Because I know your loyalty is true.

Choir
Yes, our loyalty is true[6], Count!
While on our shoulders is our head,
Turks will not call this town their own!

Zrinski.
The battle will be for life and death!

Choir
Let it be, Count, the devil we will crush!

Kaspar
Remove your daughter and wife, send them away
From Siget! To Vienna, with the king
Let them be for the duration of the war!
We will fight more easily without them.

Lorenz
But not nicer!

Eva.
Never; never!
No whatever he wants,
I stay beside my husband:
Wherever is his grave, may mine be too!
Oh Zrinski, do not listen to these people,
To you I am faithful. I stay!

(turning to her daughter Helena:)
My daughter, my beutiful flower,
Beside her fiancé:
With him either live or die,
By the will of Almighty God.

Lorenz
(to Helena)
Faithful to you are these arms,
This sword will protect you:
God will give new happiness,
And silence bitter weeping.

Helena
Like the sunshine in a drop of dew
In you my life is shines;
To you my desires carry me,
Beside you is all my happiness (fortune).

Eva (to Zrinski):
Do you see, dear husband,
The children of heroic hearts.

Zrinski.
Now I feel, that I am a Zrinski!
Oh, my wife, my child,
You stay beside us.

Helena and Lorenz
Like the sunshine in a drop of dew
In you my life is shines;
To you my desires carry me,
Beside you is all my happiness.

(Eve and Jelena go to the town).

Scene 3

The former without Eva and Helena

Zrinski.
Heroes, brothers!
Where a Croat with a Turk fights,
He is fighting for his home;
And wherever Croat blood spills,
For freedom is the fight.

(pulls out a letter).

This letter came from the king:
He tells us nicely,
While Siget is courageously
Held, until he is
Able to mobilize (collect)
All his forces (armies).

Choir
Lon live the king!

Zrinski.
As skilled fighters, bold and cheerful
Into this holy war we go - to the death!

Choir
Into this holy war we go - to the death!

Zrinski.
If, by chance, I am the first to,
This is Kaspar, your chief ,
He will take command, you will obey him!

Choir
He will take command, we will obey him!

Zrinski.
Alas before we lay down our lives,
We vow to Almighty God:

(He steps forward and fraws his sword
Around him are his officers and soldiers.)

Zrinski.
By Almighty God I swear
I will defend Siget with my life;
I will never leave you, brethren,
While inside me my living heart beats!

Choir
While inside us our living hearts beat!
By Almighty God we swear
We will defend Siget with our lives;
We will never leave you, our Count,
While inside us our living hearts beat!

Pričajte, nu, o Muhaču,
   Koji vas znade što?

Kako je bilo to?

Mejra.
O tom znamo samo mi.

Sve.
Što! Mi zmije?!

Timoleon.

   Ah ne!
To mi se je nehote zareklo, ha!
   Ako znate dobre bit,
Pjevat ću vam ja.

Podiže se Ugrin mlad
   Ma našeg sultana,
Al ga težak stiže jad
   S našeg buzdohana.

Mrtav osta mladi kralj,
   S njime mala četa;
Osmanski ih ubi malj,
   Ele - čudna šteta!

Svi.
Osmanski ih ubi malj,
   Ele - čudna šteta!

Timoleon.
Kano ptica soko siv
   Sultan širi krila:
Mori, pali kano div,
   Kud ga volja mila.

Pusto polje pokri krv,
   Zemljom prođe strava:
To se zgodi, kada crv
   Usta suprot lava.

Svi.
To se zgodi, kada crv
   Usta suprot lava.

Nek nam živi Sulejman,
   Nek ga sreća sreta.

Prizor drugi.
Pređašnji. Sulejman i Mehmed.

Zbor.

Živio Sulejman!

Sulejman (za se):

   Još Siget stoji,
   Ah Siget moj još nije!
(Mehmedu):
   Otiđi sam u Siget,
      I reci Zrinjskom',
   Da četa mala sili
   Odoljet neće moći.
   Nek preda Siget:
Nek on sa četom nosi glavu

Mehmed.

   Zalud briga, muka sva:
Njega dobro poznam ja.

Sulejman.
Al rec', da štedit neću
Ni djece, žene - nikog' -
(dolazi Timoleon.)

Timoleon.
Javljam, care, dobru vijest:
Pade Gjula i Kerečin.

Sulejman (za se):

Ah, rado čujem, rado!
   Još Siget stoji,
   Ah, Siget moj još nije!

(Mehmedu):
A ti mu reci,
Da nudim svijetlu krunu -

Mehmed.

Zalud briga, muka sva:
Njega dobro poznam ja.

Sulejman.
Nek samo preda Siget -
On kralj hrvatski budi!

Mehmed.
Slušat ću te, care moj,
Al ću zalud k njemu poć.

Sulejman.
Nek samo preda Siget -
On kralj hrvatski budi!

(odlazi s Mehmedom.)

Prizor treći.

Veselo, lako,
Burno, jako itd.

ACT IV

Turkish camp near Siget. A wide open slace away from the Sultan's tent, Turkish women, chambermaids, eunuchs, and harem guards celebrate Suleiman's victory at Mohacs.

Scene 1

Male and female choir.
Almighty is Allah,
His prophet is blessed:
To them let there be thanks!
The army is iron, our sultan is steel
They will conquer the whole world.

Fatima.
Tell me about Mohacs,
Who of you knows something?

Zulejka.
About that slaughter, the weeping,
What happened there?

Osmanka
I will tell you, I know.

Sokolica
I know it all, better.

Meira.
About that know only we.

First half of female choir.
I know!

Second half.
You do not know!

First.
However!

Others.
Nothing!

First.
How!

Others.
So!

All.
That's truly nasty!

First.
Now Peace!

Others.
No no!

All.
You will repay it!

Male Choir.
Hey!

Eunuh Timoleon.
Quite (peace)!

First.
What do you want, women?

Others.
Quarrelsom women.

All.
Who ever heard that?
They do not allow us to ddiscuss -
They do not understand anything!

Timoleon.
Quitee! ... Help me now Allah,
    To calm these snakes!

All.
What! We’re snakes ?!

Timoleon.

Ah no!
That was just a slip of the tongue!
If you know how t behave,
I will sing to you a song.

A young Hungarian rose up
Against our sultan,
But a great grief comes to him
From our swords and maces.

Dead lay the young king,
 With him a small troop;
The Osman maul killed them,
It was a great loss!

All.
The Osman maul killed them,
It was a great loss!

Timoleon.
Like the majestic bird the falcon
The sultan spreads his wings:
He burns and kills, where he wants.
Wherever his heart desires.

Bleak fields covered in blood,
Across the Earth passes dread:
That’s what happens when a worm
Stands up[7] against the lion.

All.
That’s what happens when a worm
Stands up against the lion.

Long may live Suleiman for us,
Make him good fortune follow him.

Male Choir.
To experience this day,

Women's Choir.

And many more summers!

Women's Choir.
Happy, easy,
Rapid, strong
Today our hearts beat!
Our feet by themselves
Start to dance:
Let our glory be heard everywhere!
Come, come! – Come to the dance!
      To sing,
      To play,
While our life burns like a bonfire.

     (oriental dance).

All
(in a dance)

Let joyous[8] song resound,
Let’s remember the terrible battle.

Women's Choir.
Passionately, violently
Slowly, quickly.

Male Choir.
Lovely red roses,
Dear (favorite) pastures

Women and men.
Heavenly happiness will
Sweeten the lives of the young
May it provide wu with joy.

A wonderful day has dawned,
May the whole world know how
We celebrate our great victories.

Arabian dances of all sorts are danced

Scene 2

The former. Sulejman and Mehmed.

Choir
Long live Sulejman!

Sulejman
(to himself)
Siget still stands,
Oh Siget is not yet mine!

(to Mehmed)
Go to Siget alone,
And tell Zrinski,
Thu troop low in strength
Will not be able to resist.
If he surrenders Siget:
He, with his troops, can keep his head.

Mehmed.
In vain the effort, anguish all;
I know him well.

Suleiman.
Tell him, I will spare no one
Not children, not women - no one!

(enters Timoleon.)

Timoleon.
I report, sultan, good news:
Gjula and Kerečin have fallen.

Suleiman
(to himself)
Gladly I hear this, gladly!
But, Siget still stands,
Oh, Siget is not yet mine!

(to Mehmed)
And you tell him,
I offer him a bright crown.

Mehmed.
In vain the effort, anguish all;
I know him well.

Suleiman.
If he just surrenders Siget,
He will be the King of Croatia!

Mehmed.
I listen to you, my sultan
But in vain I will go to him.

Suleiman.
If he just surrenders Siget,
He will be the King of Croatia!

(exits with Mehmed)

Scene 3

Choir
Happy, easy,
Rapid, strong
Today our hearts beat!
Our feet by themselves
Start to dance:
Let our glory be heard everywhere!
Come, come! – Come to the dance!
      To sing,
      To play,
While our life burns like a bonfire.

V. SLIKA.
(Dvorana u gradu Sigetu.)

Prizor prvi.

Zrinjski. Alapić. Juranić. Paprutović. Nekoliko časnika.

Zrinjski.
Jur puče zid na novom gradu
Od ognja turskog. Ne mogu dulje
Uzdržat druge navale!
Zapalit ćemo novi grad,
Povući se u stari;
Nek vatra naša satre sad,
Što branit mač ne mari.

Juranić.
Mirni građan blago sve
   Našoj preda ruci;
   Zara da naša sila tre,
   Što ne mogu vuci?

Zrinjski.
Šta misli Alapić?

Alapić.
Zapalit ga i strt u prah;
Jer slaba nam je snaga!

Ostali.
Nek oganj plane u taj mah,
Da gradu nema traga.

Juranić.
A zašto kralj ne teče
Junakom u pomoć?

Zrinjski.
Ne zbori tako, sinko!
Ustrajat na tom mjestu valja,
Pa nek se ruši cijeli svijet;
Za dom, za vjeru i za kralja
Bez straha znade Hrvat mrijet!

Prizor drugi.

Pređašnji.
Dolazi časnik i preda pismo.

Zrinjski
(čita):

   "Turski vođa prosi
Na samu zborit sa Zrinjskim." -

      Dovedi ga!
Vi drugi budite na blizu,
   Očekujuć moj mig.
   Proglasite građanstvu,
      Nek blago svoje nosi
      U stari grad!
A tad - Kad mignem ja,
Nek oganj sja, I proždre sve.
Žurno! Nek dođe on!
  (Svi odu).

Prizor treći.

Zrinjski
(sam).
(gleda kroz prozor na novi grad.)

Gle, kako divno sjaji grad
   U božjeg sunca traku:
A ne zna, da će skoro jad
   U crnu nać ga mraku.
Ovako sjaji ljudski vijek
   Na slave si vrhuncu:
A tada dođe usud prijek,
   I kraj je rajskom' suncu!
   Oj zbogom, grade bijeli,
I Zrinjski s tobom seli!
Zbogom

Prizor četvrti.

Zrinjski. Paprutovic. Zatim Mehmed.

Paprutovic
Turski vođa!

Zrinjski.
Nek uđe!

  (Časnik ode; Mehmed dođe.)

Zrinjski.
Sokoloviću, zar si ti?
   Zdravo! Šta je dobra?

Mehmed.
Pozdravljajuć te svijetli car
Poručuje, da predaš grad.
On štuje hrabrost tvoju:
Milostiv bit će tebi.

Zrinjski.
Milostiv bit će meni!?
   Al ja sam Šubić-Zrinjski!
Pa ako car tvoj želi grad,
   Nek sam po ključe dođe.

Mehmed.
Al ti si otac, muž!
Pa dobro! Ako ne daš grada,
Na muke, ruglo i sramotu
Razapet ćemo ženu, kćer.

Zrinjski.
O, boljelo te grlo,
Ti gadni čovječe!

Mehmed.
Meni te je žao!

Zrinjski.
Bijedno Ture!
Ti ne znaš moje žene, kćeri.

Mehmed.
Ne traži sultan grada zahman,
   On svijetlu krunu nudi:
Da budeš kralj, gdje sad si ban,
Ti kralj hrvatski budi!

Zrinjski.

Nek Zapolja mu bude kralj,
   Al Zrinjski nikad, nikada!
      Hrvatu ban je kralj:
      On mjesto kralja vlada.

Mehmed.
Još jednu riječ - al strepi!
      (vadi srebrni rog).

Znaš li rog taj?

Zrinjski.
Ah, grb je moj –
a rog mi sina Đure!

Mehmed.

Ulovismo ga, čuješ!
   Ako li ne daš grada,
      Sin će tvoj da strada:
 Mučit ćemo njega,
 Ko što nikog' još!

Zrinjski.
Moj sin! O bože, sin mi Đuro!

Mehmed.
Govori sad, govori brzo!

Zrinjski.
Mučite ga, divlje zvijeri,
Reži, sijeci, pali, deri:
On je sin moj, junak, lav!

      (otvori vrata i viče):

Paprutoviću, pali grad!
   Nek Turčin zna,
   Kad oganj sja,
Da tako grud nam plamti.

Mehmed.
Junaštvu tvom' se divim!

Zrinjski.
Ko ja - svi misle tako.
   Jeleno! Evo! Alapić! Juranić!
   Ovamo svi, ovamo!

Prizor peti.

Pređašnji. Jelena. Eva. Alapić. Juranić. Paprutović. Časnici.

Eva.
Šta želiš, mili mužu?

Alapić.
Što oko tako sjaji?

Zrinjski.
Recite Turčinu tomu
Zakletve svetu riječ!

Svi časnici.
Do zadnje kapi krvi!

Zrinjski
(ženi i kćeri):
I vi mu rec'te!

Eva i Jelena.
Za dom je slatko mrijeti!

Zrinjski
Na moju dođ'te grud! (grupa).
(ogrli ih).

(kroz prozor prodire svjetlo ognja; rakete lete).

Paprutović.

Sa sedam strana gori novi grad!

Zrinjski (Mehmedu):
Otiđi, kaži caru,
U gradu što si vidio. -

Act V
(Hall in the city of Siget.)

Scene 1

Zrinski, Kaspar, Lorenz, Wulf. Several officers.

Zrinski.
The wall of New Town is crumbling
From the Turkish fire. I can’t any longer
Hold off more attacks (assaults)!
We will fire a New Town,
Retreat into Old Town;
Let our fire now burn down,
What our swords can no longer defend.

Lorenz
Good citizens have everything
 Put into our hands to defend;
Now by our hands we must burn,
What we don’t want the wolves to have?

Zrinski.
What do you think Kaspar?

Kaspar
Set it on fire and crumble it into dust;
Because we are weak in strength!

Others.
Set the fires at once,
Of the city there will be no trace.

Lorenz
Why does the king come come?
To help his heroes?

Zrinski.
Do not like that, my son!
To persist in this place is worthy,
Even if the whole world crumbles;
For the Homeland, for faith and for king
Fearlessly, Croats know how to give their life!

Scene 2

The former.
Wulf enters and presents a letter.

Zrinski
(reading)

   "The Turkish leader requests
To meet himself with Zrinski. "-

(to Wulf)

Bring him in!
You others stay close,
Await my signal.
Announce to the residents,
To carry their goods
Into the citadel!
And then - When I signal,
Let the fire burn,
And devour everything.
Hurry! Let him come!
  (All exit)

Scene 3

Zrinski
(alone)
(looking out the window to New Town.)

See, how beautiful the town shines
In the sun's last rays:
Not knowing that soon misery
Will soon turn the shine into darkness.
Likewise shines human life
In glory we are at the peak,
And then comes harsh judgement (fate),
And the end of paradise in the sun!
O goodbye, dear white town,
And Zrinski shares your fate!
Farewell!

Scene 4

Zrinski. Wulf. Then Mehmed.

Wulf
The Turkish leader!

Zrinski.
Let him enter!

  (Wulf exits, Mehmed enters.)

Zrinski.
Sokolovic, is that you you?
Hello! How are you?

Mehmed.
The Mighty Sultan sends his greetings
He calls on you to surrender the city.
He respects your courage:
Merciful will he be to you.

Zrinski.
Merciful he will be to me !?
But I am Šubić-Zrinjski!
If your sultan wants the fortress,
Let him come himself for the keys.

Mehmed.
You're a father, husband!
Well good! If you don’t give up the fortress,
To suffering, embarrassment and shame
We’ll torture you wife and daughter.

Zrinski.
Oh, does your throat hurt[9],
You despicable man!

Mehmed.
I feel sorry for you!

Zrinski.
Miserable (pitiable) Turk!
You do not know my wife or daughter.

Mehmed.
The sultan doesn’t ask for the fortress without reward[10],
He offers you a bright crown:
You will be king, where you are now viceroy[11],
You will be king of Croatia!

Zrinski.
Let Zapolya be his king,
But Zrinski never, never!
To a Croat, the viceroy is king:
In the emperor’s place he rules.

Mehmed.
Just one more word – beware!
(pulls out silver horn[12]).

Do you know this horn?

Zrinski.
Oh, the crest[13] is mine,
The horn belongs to my son George!

Mehmed.
We caught him, you hear!
If you do not surrender the city,
Your son will perish[14]:
We'll beat him,
As no one else before!

Zrinski.
My son! O my God, my son, George!

Mehmed.
Speak now, speak fast!

Zrinski.
Torture him, you wild beasts,
Cut him, hack him, burn him, tear him apart:
He is my son, a hero, a lion!

(opens the door and yells):

Wulf, burn the city!
Let this Turk know,
When fire burns bright,
That's how our hearts burn.

Mehmed.
I admire your heroism!

Zrinski
As I do - everyone thinks the same.
Helena! Behold! Kaspar! Lorenz!
Here, everyone, here!

Scene 5

The former. Helena. Eva. Kaspar Lorenz, Wulf and officers.

Eva.
What do you want, my dear husband?

Kaspar
Why is your eye so bright?

Zrinski.
Tell this Turk
The sacred words of our oath!

All the officers.
To the last drop of blood!

Zrinjski
(to his wide and daughter)
You also tell him!

Eva and Helena
For the Homeland ,
it is a pleasure to give our life!

Zrinjski
(to Eva and Helena)
Come to my arms!

(he hugs them)

(through the window, light of fires, rockets fly).

Wulf
On seven sides New Town is burning!

Zrinski
(to Mehmed)
Go away, tell your sultan,
What you have seen here.

VI. SLIKA.
(Čador Sulejmanov).

Prizor prvi.

Sultan sjedi u naslonjaču pogružen, satrven. Iza njega Levi.
Mehmed uđe.

Mehmed
(tiho Leviju):
Kako je caru?

Levi
(isto tako).
O zlo, i još će gorje biti!

Mehmed.
Otkada boluje?

Levi.
Otkako ti se vrati
   Iz Sigeta! - - -
Ja dođoh k njemu iza tebe,
I nađoh ga u nemoći:
On drhće, - sve ga tijelo zebe,
Ah, njemu nema pomoći.

Mehmed.

Ukloni se!
     (Pristupi caru).
   Veseli se, o care:
   Pol Ugarske je tvoje,
   Otkako Gjula pade.

Sulejman.
Ti reci, da je Siget moj,
I egipatski bit ćeš kralj!

(zamisli se i najednom se trgne).

A gdje je Ivan Kralj,
Što svjetova me na taj rat;
Sto tisuć konjanika
Za boj mi stalno reče dat?

Mehmed.
Izvini ga: on veli,
Da dravski most bi kasno gotov.

Sulejman.
A tko je imô gradit most?

Mehmed.
Hamza-beg.

Sulejman.
Odrubit daj mu glavu! Idi!
Nek padne on! Nek padne namah!

   (Mehmed ode).

Prizor drugi.

Sulejman. Levi.

Sulejman.
Utruđen bojem sjedim,
Još svijet mi drhće sav!
Ja čeznem, venem, blijedim,
Izdiše stari lav.

Levi.
On umire!

Sulejman.
Prokletstvo na te! Što to veliš?

Levi.
Prol'jevat mi je suze,
Doskora smrt te uze.

Sulejman.
Ha, zato suze liješ?!
Levi, Levi, zar ti mniješ,
Da junak teško umire?
Al samo sad mi pruži lijek,
Da prije vidim glavu
Pod mojom nogom.
O Zrinjski, Zrinjski,
I ti ćeš sa mnom poći!

Prizor treći.

Pređašnji. Mehmed. Begler-beg. Mustafa. Ali Portuk.

Mehmed.
Po želji tvojoj pade Hamza-beg!

Ostala trojica.
Pred čadorom mu leži glava!

Sulejman.
Juriš, juriš! I Siget mora past,
I Zrinjski s njim! Juriš, juriš!

   (Tri vođe odu).

   (Čuju se trublje na juriš).

Sulejman.
Pomozi, Levi!
   O drži me, pomozi!
Alah, Alah, čuj svog slugu,
   Razveseli moju tugu:
Prije moje smrti
   Daj mi Siget strti!

Mehmed.
Izruči meni daljnu brigu.

   (Opet trube).

Sulejman.
Zar ne čuješ, gdje kliču!
Oh kako godi uhu mom'
Ta buka, te me sjeća
Prošastih dana mojih!
   Juriš, juriš!

Prizor četvrti.

Pređašnji. Ali Portuk.

Ali Portuk.
Suzbijen si, o care,
A čete tvoje bježe!

Sulejman.
Siget mora past! Napred! Napred!

Ali Portuk.
Ne mogu, možni care!

Sulejman.
(bijesan, ispravi se i baci bodež na Ali Portuka).

 U pako hajd!
(sruši se na naslonjač).

       Juriš, juriš!
(izdahne).

Levi.
Alah! Care gospodaru!
(Klekne do njega).

Mehmed
(pristupi).
Ha! On izdahnu!
Sad je vlast u mojih ruku,
Sat će za me Zrinjski čut:
Spravit ću mu grdnu muku,
I za carem kazat put!

Prizor peti.

Pređašnji. Mustafa.

Mehmed.
Polako; car je umro!

Mustafa.
Pobunila se vojska!

Mehmed.
Večeras će ga vojska vidjet -
 (slugam):

Odnes'te, braćo, cara!
(sluge ga odnesu i Levi s njima ode).

Mehmed
(vođam).
To nitko ne zna osim nas:
   Potkupio sam sluge;
A Levi? Njega bodež taj
   Rješava službe druge.

A sad na Siget!
   U Stambul tada ravno!

Ali Portuk i Mustafa.
Zar ne na Beč?

Mehmed.
Ne, ne; jer njemački nas čeka car
   Sa silnom vojskom! - -

Ali Portuk i Mustafa.
O kleti Zrinjski!
Al evo desnice:
Ti radi, kako znaš.

Mehmed.
Potecite u vojsku:
Razglasite da car se želi kazat.

(stisne im ruke a oni odlaze).

Dok se vidimo! -

Sad je vlast u mojih ruku,
Sad će za me Zrinjski čut:
Spravit ću mu grdnu muku
I za carem kazat put!

Act VI

Suleiman’s tent

Scene 1

The sultan is sitting in a chair depressed, worn out. Behind him stands Levi. Mehmed enters.

Mehmed
(quietly to Levi)
How's the sultan?

Levi
(also quietly)
Oh not good, and it will get worse.

Mehmed.
Since when has he been ill?

Levi.
Since your return from Siget!
I came to him after you,
And I found him in helplessness:
He trembles, - all his body is cold,
Oh, there is no help for him.

Mehmed.
(to Levi)
Remove yourself!

(Approach to the Sultan).
Be happy, o sultan:
Half of Hungary is yours,
After the fall of Gyula?

Suleiman.
Tell me, that Siget is mine,
And you will be the king of Egypt!

(goes into thought and then a sudden jolt)

Where is King John,
Who counseled me into this war?
One hundred thousand horsemen
For the battle he still does not give?

Mehmed.
Forgive him: he says,
The Drava Bridge was finished late.

Suleiman.
Who was supposed to build the bridge?

Mehmed.
Hamza-bey.

Suleiman.
Have his head cut off! Go!
I want him dead! Dead immediately!

(Mehmed exits)

Scene 2

Suleiman. Levi.

Suleiman
Tired of this battle I sit,
The world still trembles before me!
I yearn, I wither (fade), becoming faint,
The old lion draws his last breath.

Levi.
He’s dying!

Suleiman.
Damn you! What did you say?

Levi.
My tears will flow,
Some death will take you.

Suleiman.
Ha, for that you spill tears (weep)?!
Levi, Levi, is that your opinion,
That a hero dies with difficulty (slowly)?
Right now give me medicine,
So that I will see the head
Under my feet.
Of Zrinski, Zrinski!
And you will come with me!

Scene 3

The former.
Mehmed. Beyler-bey. Mustafa. Ali Portuk.

Mehmed.
By your will, Hamza-bey is dead!

Other three.
His head lies in front of the tent!

Suleiman.
Attack, Attack! Siget must fall,
Zrinski falls with it! Attack, Attack!

(Three leaders exit).

(Trumpets are heard in the assault).

Suleiman.
Help me, Levi!
Oh, hold me, help me!
Allah, Allah, hear your servant,
Cheer me from this sadness:
Before my death
Give me Siget in ruins!

Mehmed.
Give me further concerns.[15]

(Again trumpets).

Suleiman.
Do not you hear, where do they shout[16]!?
Oh how it pleases my ear
That noise, it reminds me
Of days from my past!
Atack! Attack

Scene 4

The former. Ali Portuk.

Ali Portuk.
You are defeated, o sultan
Your soldiers flee!

Suleiman.
Siget must fall!
Forward! Forward!

Ali Portuk.
I can not, mighty sultan!

Suleiman.
(angry, stands and throws a dagger at Ali Portuk).

 Go to hell!
(falls into his chair)

Attack! Attack !
(dies)

Levi.
Allah! Oh my sultan lord!
(Kneels beside him)

Mehmed
(approaches)
Ha! He has died!
Now all power is in my hands,
Now Zrinski will know of me:
I will send him great suffering,
And show him the sultan’s path!

Scene 5

The former. Mustafa.

Mehmed.
Slowly; the sultan has died!

Mustafa.
The army will mutiny!

Mehmed.
The army will see him tonight
 (to the slaves)

Take him, brothers, the sultan!

(servants take him away and Levi goes with them).

Mehmed
(to the leaders)
Nobody can know about this except us:
I bribed the servants;
A Levi? With this dagger
The problem will be solved by others.

Now, onto Siget!
Then to Istambul straight away!

Ali Portuk and Mustafa.
Not on Vienna?

Mehmed.
No no; the German emperor awaits us
With a great army! - -

Ali Portuk and Mustafa.
O accursed Zrinjski!
But here is my right hand:
You work, as you know.

Mehmed.
Go to the army:
Announce that the sultan wishes to show himself.

(shakes their hands and they exit).

Until we meet again! -

Now all power is in my hands,
Now Zrinski will know of me:
I will send him great suffering,
And show him the sultan’s path!

VII. SLIKA.

(Podzemlje u gradu Sigetu).

Prizor prvi.

Eva i Jelena (ulaze).

Eva.
Ovamo, kćeri moja,
Zaklonimo se ovdje!

Jelena.
Ah čini mi se, majko,
To mjesto kano tamnica!
   Tijesna mi je grud,
   Strah me hvata lud:
   Sve se tijelo trese,
Sva mi duša strepi.

Eva.
O dijete moje,
Doskora bit će bolje!
Tu mjesta nije za nas,
Provalit ćemo danas
Iz tamnice nam ove,
Kud bog nas, kćerko, zove.

Jelena.
Nek bude volja božja!

Eva.
Sa ocem još mi zborit valja.
Ti čekaj tu, i spremna budi,
Kad pošaljemo po te.
Ja idem! Dok se vidimo!

Jelena.
Zbogom, zbogom, majko!
   (Eva ju poljubi i ode).

Prizor drugi.

Jelena
(sama).

   O bože, gdje sam?
   Zar tu, ah tu?
Nikoga nema, nikoga,
Tamnice da me riješi;
Nema mi moga dragoga,
Bolno da srce tješi!

O gdje si dragi? Ah čujem te!
   Al ne, to vjetar huji!
Šta čujem? Kano pjesme zvuk,
   Ko majčine pjesme jeka.
Još jednom - bolna srca -
      Majčinu pjevat ću pjesmu:

POPJEVKA.

Cvate ruža rumena
Posred vrta bajna:
Kakva mi je ljuvena,
Kano zora sjajna.

Oj ti ružo, ružice
Tko će ubrat tebe?
Čije li će ručice
Tobom kitit sebe?

Doć će junak mlađani,
Ubrat će te jednom:
Moj će vrt se krašani
Tugom odjet lednom!

(Jelena sve tiše pjeva; pri koncu savlada ju čuvstvo i ona usne.
U snu joj se prikazuje sanak o njezinoj sreći).

Prizor treći.

(Sanak Jelene: Mjesto oko Zrinja-grada. Vile se sastanu i pjevaju).

Zbor vilâ.

Ljubio je goluban
   Golubicu bijelu;
Pjevao joj po vas dan,
   Gukô noću cijelu.

Golubica - Jelena,
   Golub - njezin dragi:
   U nje usta medena,
   U njeg pogled blagi.

   (Dolazi Jelena i Juranić).

Vile
(pozdravljajuć ih).

Mladenaca evo naših:
   Živili mladenci!

Jelena.
Posestrime, mile vile,
Na pozdravu hvala!

Juranić.
Prispje eto svečan sat
Našega vjenčanja:
Kćerku će mi otac dat
Posred svog imanja.

Vile.
Sretan bio ovaj pir,
Pratio vas sveti mir!

(Jelena i Juranić idu redom kraj vila).

Prva vila
(Jeleni):
U toj ruci krasnoj
Trag je zori jasnoj!

Jelena.
Hvala, sestro!

Druga vila
(Juraniću).
U tom oku žarkom
Istok suncu jarkom'!

Treća vila
(Obima).
Vjenčava se zorica
Sunce će uzeti!

Jelena i Juranić
(vilam):
Svaka naša sestrica
Kano zvijezda svijeti!

(dok vile pjevaju sljedeće, ode Jelena i Juranić).

Vile.
   Vaše sreće
   Prvo cvijeće
Krasno vama cvate tu:
   Ljubav sveta
   Mladih ljeta
Obuze vam dušu svu!

   Ljubio je goluban itd.

(Kad ispjevaju, isčeznu vile. Jelena se vidi na mjestu, gdje je usnula).

Prizor četvrti.

Jelena se prene.

Jelena
(kao iza sna).

   U nje usta medena,
   U njeg' pogled blagi!
Ah! - Šta je to?
Kako milo ječi zvuk!
Je l' istina il' samo san?
   O san je, san!
Sve je kô i prije,
Utjehe mi nije,
Sve je samo san. –

Prizor peti.

Jelena. Juranić (dolazi).

Jelena
(poleti mu na grudi).

O nije san,
Kad tebe grlim -

Juranić.
O pođi sa mnom, draga!

Jelena.
   Čuj me, čuj!
Sanjala sam divan san,
   Jasno ko na javi:
Da je došo vjenčan dan,
   Vršak našoj slavi.

Juranić.
Vjenčat će nas vječni bog
U nebeskih dvorih. -
   Po te dođoh, otac zove,
Sve je spremno, hajd, o hajd!

Jelena.
Zar ja? A kamo?
   Ne mogu nikamo.
Zar da me Turčin ubije,
Il gorje još: da muči mene?
   O ne, o ne!

(bliže k njemu)

Evo ti noža:
Probodi svoju Jelenu,
Nek s tvoje ruke umre.

Juranić.
O jaoh, dušo, šta to reče?
Da tebe ja probodem? O bože!

Jelena.
Na koljenih te molim:
Probodi me!
Il hoćeš, da me Turčin muči,
Sramoti naše ime!

Juranić.
Oprosti, bože, - Jeleno oprosti!
      (očajan hoće da ju probode)

Jelena.
(ustavi mu ruku).
Ne tako bijesno!
Polako nož u srce rini,
Polako, polagano:
Sa usta mojih dušu skini,
Da umrem potihano.

Jelena i Juranić.
Zbogom srećo moja,
Kratka mi bijaše:
Posred ljuta boja
Kraj je ljubve naše!

(Juranić ju probode: ona mu padne u naručaj).

Jelena.
Hvala, dragi;
Ti smrću život daruješ!

(slabije).

Još jedan cjelov! Tako!
A sada - zbogom, zbogom!
Pozdravi oca, majku, junake sve!

(Jelena izdahne).

Juranić.
Ne, ne - probudi se!
O bože zar je nema?
Blago tebi, dušo čista,
Tvoj je svijetli raj. -
       (čuje izvana glasove).

Ha već zovu: već je čas!
Sad rado umirem. –

Act VII

(Underground in the citadel of Siget).

Scene 1

Eva and Helena enter.

Eva.
Here, my daughter,
We will find shelter here!

Helena
It seems to me, mother,
This place is like a dungeon!
 I'm tense in my chest,
Mad fear catches me:
My whole body shakes.
My soul is full of dread.

Eva.
Oh, my child,
Soon it will be better!
This place is not for us,
We'll escape today
From this dungeon of ours,
Where God calls us, my daughter.

Helena
Let it be by the will of God!

Eva
With your father I still must talk.
You wait here, and be ready,
For when we send for you.
I'm going! Until we see each other again[17]!

Helena
Goodbye, goodbye, Mother!

(Eva kisses her and leaves).

Scene 2

Helena
(solo)

Oh, my God, where am I?
Either here, or there?
No one is here, no one,
To take me out of this dungeon;
I do not have my darling,
To comfort my aching heart!

Where are you my dear? I hear you!
But no, that is the wind blowing!
What do I hear? Like the sound of a song,
Like mother’s songs of old.
Once again - aching heart -
I will sing my mother’s song:

She sings.

Red roses bloom
In a magic garden:
Like my beloved,
Beautiful as the dawn.

Oh you rose, of roses
Who will pick[18] you?
Whose hands will
Decorate themselves with you?

A young hero will come,
He will take you at once:
My lovely garden will
From sadness turn to ice!

(Jelena sings quietly, and near the end overtaken by emotions she falls asleep. In her sleep she  has a dream about her happiness[19].)

Scene 3

(Helena’s dream: A place near Zrinski-town. Fairies gather and sing).

Choir of fairies.

The (male) dove loved
A white (female) dove[20];
He sang to her all day,
Cooed and wooed all night.

Golubica - Helena,
Golub - her darling:
She has lips like honey,
His visage is gentle.

(Helena and Lorenz arrive).

Fairies
(welcoming them).

Here are our young ones:
Long live the newlyweds!

Jelena.
Be my sister[21], dear fairy,
Thank you for your greetings!

Lorenz
Now comes a cermenonial hour
Of our wedding:
His daughter a father will give to me
In the middle of your estate.

Fairies.
May this couple be happy,
May holy peace follow you!

(Jelena and Juranic go by the end of the Fairy).

First Fairy [22]
(to Helena)
In your beautiful hand,
The path for dawn is clear!

Helena.
Thank you sister!

Seconf Fairy
(to Lorenz)
In your glowing eye
Eastern Sun shines bright!

Third Fairy
(to both).
The morning star rises
The sun will take!

Helena and Juranić
(to the fairies)
All of our sisters
As the star shines!

(while the fairies sing the following,
Helena and Lorenzo exit).

Fairies.
Your happiness
First flowers
Blooms beautiful here:
Love of the world
Young years
Encircles your entire soul!

The (male) dove loved
A white (female) dove;
He sang to her all day,
Cooed and wooed all night.

(When they finish the song, the fairies exit. Helena is seen where she fell asleep).

Scene 4

Helena awakes.

Helena
(drowsy after sleep).

She has lips honey,
His visage gentle!
Ah! - What is that?
How sweet a sound calls!
Am I awake or is this a dream?
O a dream it is, a dream!
All is as it was before,
I have no comfort,
All is just a dream.

Scene 5

Helena. Lorenzo (enters).

Helena
(throws herself into his arms)

O is not a dream,
When I cry to you -

Lorenz
Come with me, darling!

Helena
Listen to me, listen!
I dreamed a wonderful dream,
Clear as it can be,
That our wedding day has come,
The pinnacle of our glory[23].

Lorenz
Eternal God will marry us
In the heavenly gardens.
I came for you, your father calls,
Everything is ready, come, o come!

Helena
Do I? And where?
I can’t go anywhere.
Perhaps the Turks kill me,
Or worse: they torture me?
Oh no, no!

(comes closer to him)

Here's a dagger:
Pierce your Helena,
By your hands may I die.

Lorenz
But ala, darling, what did you say?
That I stab you? Oh God!

Helena
On my knees I beg you:
Stab me!
Or do you want the Turks to be torture me,
And put shame on our name!

Lorenz
Sorry, God, - Jeleno, sorry!
      (desperate wills to kick her)

Helena
(raises his hand)
Not so violently!
Slowly push the knife into my heart,
Slowly, gently:
Through my mouth take my soul,
So I die quietly.

Helena and Lorenz
Go with God my happiness,
Short was our time:
In the middle of fierce battle
The end of our love!

(Lorenz stabs her: she falls into his arms).

Helena
Thank you dear;
With death you gift me life!

(Weaker).

One more kiss! Like so!
And now - goodbye, go with God!
Give greetings to your father, mother, heroes all!

(Helena breathes her last).

Lorenz
No, no - wake up!
God is she really gone?
Blessed be you, pure soul,
Yours is a bright paradise.

(hears voices outside)

They already call: Now is the time!
Now I'll gladly die.

VIII. SLIKA.

(Dvorište u gradu Sigetu).

Prizor prvi.

Zrinjski. Eva.

Zrinjski.
Pod vedrim nebom zadnju riječ ti zborim,
Nek nebo čuje zadnji pozdrav moj;
Nadođe čas, da kano Hrvat tvorim,
Održim rodu sveti zavjet svoj!
   I Zrinjski će uminut,
   I četa mala s njim,
   Al rodu sunce sinut,
   Raspršit ropstva dim!
      Al zašto moram jaoh,
      Žrtvovat dijete, ženu?

Eva.
Ne krati slave nama!
Ta šta je život bez tebe?
Od usta će do usta letit
Junaštva tvoga dike!
Uz tebe će se mene sjetit,
I kćeri Zrinjskog Nike.
   Kad plane grad,
Na bedemu ću stajat:
U prah ću baklju bacit,
Poletit u visine!

Zrinjski
(zagrli ju).

Na krilih slave letimo
Pred vječne pravde sud;
Božanskim žarom njetimo
Hrvatsku vjernu grud!

Prizor drugi.

Pređašnji. Juranić (dolazi uzrujan).

Zrinjski.
Gle milog sina, ženo!
   A gdje je naša kći?

Juranić.
Anđelak vam je Jelena:
   Ispred nas ode gore
U vječne božje dvore.

Zrinjski i Eva.
O bože, tebi hvala,
Koj blago uze nju!

Prizor treći.

Pređašnji. Alapić, Paprutović, časnici i vojnici.
(Dolaze sa zastavom).

Časnici i vojnici.
Stijeg hrvatski visoko se vije!
Hrvat rado svoju krvcu lije
   Za kralja, rod i dom!

(čuju se trublje turske na juriš).

Zrinjski.
Sad napred braćo:
Već zove bijesno Ture!
Ti Juraniću nosi zastavu;
   Ja za tobom,
   A za mnom ti, (Paprutoviću).
      A tada Alapić! -
Ali prije nego izginemo,
Hajdmo braćo, da se zagrlimo

(Časnici ga okupe; on se grli i rukuje s njima).

Juranić
(digne zastavu).

      U boj, u boj!
      Mač iz toka braćo:
      Nek Turčin zna.
      Kako mremo mi!

Zrinjski, Alapić, Paprutović, Eva, časnici i vojnici.

      Grad naš već gori,
      Stiže do nas već žar:
      Rik turski ori,
      Bijesan je njihov jar!

Ko požar taj
Grudi naše plamte;
Utiša rik
Mača naših zvek.

      Ko bratac brata
      Zrinjskog poljub'te svi,
      Za mnom na vrata,
      Vjerni junaci vi!

      Sad braćo!
Pun'mo puške, samokrese:
Naše grome, naše trijese,
Neka ore, ruše, more!
Brusmo ljute naše mače,
Neka sijeku jače, jače!

      Sad zbogom bud, dome naš,
      Zauvijek, oj zbogom;
      Od svud, od svud
Na te dušman ide prijek.
I već u grob sveti trup
      Sklada tvoj, al neće!
Za te sin svak u boj se kreće:
      Dome naš, ti vijekom stoj!

      Hajd u boj, u boj!
      Za dom u boj!
   Ma paklena množ
   Na nj diže svoj nož;

      Hajd u boj!
Nas mal, al hrabar je broj
      Tko, tko će ga strt?
 Smrt vragu, - smrt!
Za domovinu mrijeti - kolika slast,
Prot dušmaninu - mora on past!
  (Svi odu).

Prizor četvrti.

Pozorište je dio gorućega staroga grada.
Odzada novi grad sa uzdignutim mostom.
Buka Turaka. Juranić sa zastavom, za njim Zrinjski i ostali.
Junački se bore. Eva se ukaže na barutani s bakljom.
Juranić pada, Zrinjski za njim.
Eva baci baklju u barutanu: silan prasak: novi grad se sruši.

Zastor padne.

Act VII

(Courtyard in the citadel of Siget).

Scene 1

Zrinski. Eva.

Zrinski.
Under the clear sky, I speak my last word,
Let heaven hear my last greeting;
Now comes the time, that as a Croat,
For my people, I carry out my sacred oath!
And Zrinski will perish,
And the small garrison with him,
But for the Croats the sun will shine[24],
Disperse the fog of slavery[25]!
But why do I have to woefully,
Sacrifice my child, my wife?

Eva.
Do not deny us our glory!
What is life without you?
From mouth to mouth will fly
The pride in your heroism[26]!
Beside you I will be remembered,
And the daughter of Nikola Zrinski.
When the fortress falls,
On the ramparts I will stand:
Into the gunpowder I will throw a torch,
Fly into the sky!

Zrinski
(hugs her)

We fly on the wings of glory
Before the eternal court of justice[27];
In the divine fire we will struggle
To protect the faithful Croatian home!

Scene 2

The former. Lorenzo (enters upset).

Zrinski.
Wife, Look at our dear son!
 But where is our daughter?

Lorenz
An angel is your Helena:
She goes up before us.
Into the eternal heavenly palace.

Zrinjski and Eve.
Oh God, thank you,
For kindly receiving her!

Scene 3

The former. Kaspar, Wulf, officers and soldiers.
(They enter with a flag).

Officers and soldiers.
The Croatian flag flies high!
The Croat gladly spills his blood
For the king, family and home!

(Turkish trumpets for the assault are heard).

Zrinski.
Now forwards brothers:
The raging Turk already calls!
You Lorenz, carry the flag;
I will follow you,
Wulf will come next.
And then Kaspar!
But before we perish,
Come brothers, may we embrace

(The officers gather around him, he hugs them and shakes their hands).

Lorenz
(raises the flag).

Into battle, into battle!
Brothers, unsheath your swords:
Let the Turk (enemy) know.
How gallantly we die!

Zrinski, Kaspar, Wulf, Eva, officers and soldiers.

Our fort already burns,
Flames have reached us:
The Turkish shouts echo,
Ferocious is their rage!

Like the fire
Our hearts burn;
Their shouts are silenced
By the steel of our swords.

As brother to brother
Everyone kissed[28] Zrinski,
Follow me to the gate,
Faithful heroes you all!

Now brothers!
Load the muskets, pistols:
Our mortars, our cannons,
Let them roar, topple, destroy!
Sharpen our fierce swords,
May they cut deeper, deeper!

Now, be with God[29], our home,
Forever, oh farewell;
From anywhere and everywhere
The enemy advances on you.
And into the grave, your sacred corpse
He plans to put, but he won’t!
For you[30] every son marches into battle:
Our Home, you will stand for ages!

Come into battle, into battle!
For home into battle!
Though a hellish multitude[31]
Raise your sword against them!

Charge into battle!
While few, we are brave!
Who, who will destroy him?
Death to the devil, - Death!

To sacrifice for the Homeland – such an honor,
Against the enemy - he must fall!

  (All exit).

Scene 4

The scene is part of a burning Old Town.
A behind is the citadel with drawbridge raised.
Tumult of the Turks.  Lorenz with flag followed by Zrinski and others.  They fight heroically. Eva becomes visible at the poder magazine.
Juranic falls, Zrinski falls next.
Eva throws the torch into the powder magazine: an incredible explosion: the citadel is demoloished.

The curtain falls.

[7] or “takes up arms against”
[8] maybe harmonious
