Tezkom mukom izradio je, da je sabor dozvolio ratnu dacu po dva zlatna forinta od svakoga kmetskoga selišta (ili porte), izuzevši one krajeve, koji su minule godine stradali od turskoga pljackanja. Obnovljene biše još prijašnje odredbe glede stajace vojske i obcega ustanka (insurekcije). Na posljedku bi još upravljena molba na kralja, da još ove godine ili na početku dojduće sam glavom sabor obdrzava. Zaključi saborski zajedno s knjigom prituzaba biše poslani kralju u Augsburg, koji ih je 2. svibnja 1566. ondje i potvrdio.

The Battle of Szigetvar by Vjekoslav Klaic

As recorded in historical accounts

At that time individual Turkish pashas began to wage war in Hungary. The pasha of Budim, Arslan, attacked the fort of Palota west of Szekesfehervar on June 5th 1566, but retreated after ten days when the counts of Helfenstein and the captain of Gyor, Salm, came to its aid. Salm went on to take not only the neighbouring Vesprim, but in the middle of July also took the well-fortified Totis. Some commanders even considered attacking Esztergon, but King Maximilian II ordered the dukes to limit themselves to defence, since word was received that the Sultan was on his way.

 Introduction

A few months ago while doing research into leadership I stumbled upon some leadership and “team building” speeches that Nikola Zrinski (Zrinyi, Miklous) gave to his troops in 1566 when more than 100,000 Ottomans besieged the fortress of Szigetvar manned by 2,300 Croatian and Hungarian soldiers.  The first quote, at the start of the siege, that caught my attention was:
