Letter from Chantone September 22 - translation

Győr camp. 1566 sept. 22

Excerpts from Chantone's report to his king about the fall of Szigetvár.

Siget still stands and the sultan will not move from there ul he takes it even if he has to lose Buda, Esxtergom and Székesfehérvár.

Soon we came to the conclusion that the Turks had failed in 15 assaults and the walls were so destroyed by cannons that the insides of the fortress could be seen.  A mountain was made from which they could fire into the fortress.  There can't be more than 500 or 600 people. 

Count Zrinski captured a Janissary aga and had him impaled in front of the eyes of the enemy after the sultan asked him to surrender.

The Ottomans made another assault that started at 7:00 and lasted 3 hours and those inside could almost not hold any longer but the enemy did not enter.

Only the count was still alive, fighting, exited through a small door and no one dared approach him even though he only had his sabre in his hand. The Turks told him to surrender and not lose his life because the sultan will treat him well but he refused and a Janissary was ordered to shoot him and he was hit in the stomach but he still stood and shouted to the dogs to come close and fight him.  No one approached him and then he was hit by two more bullets, on to the chest and one to the head and then he fell. When he was down they came and cut off his head and brought it to the sultan (Grand Vizier) who when he saw it asked if it was the count's head and they assured him it was.  The GV said; "Croatian, Croatian, I often asked you to give up the castle and you refused.  Now you give it to me with your head."

Nevertheless, given the count's status he did the honorable thing and placed a yellow taffeta on the dead face and covered it with black velvet and put on a carpet on the floor.  After holding it for one day the head was sent to the governor of Buda who wrapped it in red taffeta and sent it to Count Salm in Komarom.

On Sunday, September 15, the whole of the Komarom guard came to the camp at Gyor where wrapped in black velvet decorated with a white cross the head was escorted to the gate of the city by a unit of Hungarian cavalry.

On the emperor's command the carriage stopped in the camp to bring the coffin to the church with all the gentlemen and priests accompanying him.

All of Hungary will certainly mourn the dead man who fought so valiantly thoughout the siege, especially on August 29 when all the Janissaries came, on the 30th when the Spahi and the 31 when all the rest charged.  On Sep 7 he walked out dressed in his finest clothes of silver with many jewels.  It is not known what happened to his body except that they cut off his hands to remove his gold bracelets.

In the last siege of Siget died Ali Portug, the sanjak-bey of Rhodes who was wounded in the same was Dragut was kill in Malta.

Ságra cesarea regesta magestad. — — Ciguet estaua todauia en pie, mas el turco no hauia de mouer de ally hasta tomarle, aunque supiesse perder todas las demas plaças, que tiene en la frontéra desta parte de Buda, Estrigonia y Albarragal. No tardo muchos dias despues que supimos que hauiendo perdido los turcos quinze assaltos en Ciguet, y batido la placa de tal manera que la montaña hecha descubria todo lo de dentro del castillo, y no quedauan en el mas de quinientos a seiscientos hombres y que el conde de Serin en tomando el haga de los geniçaros le hauia empalado puesto a vista de los enemigos, porque en aquel tiempo el turco embio a solicitar que se rindiesse, le hauian dado otro assalto general a los siete deste, el qual duro tres horas y los de dentro no pudieron sostener mas, que los enemigos no entrassen, y assy vencidos y muertos todos quantos hauia dentro, sino el dicho conde, que siempre peleo, y a la fin se huuo de retirar en una puertecilla, que nadíe se le osaua allegar, aunque no tenia sino su cemitarra en la mano, y el turco le embio a dezir que se rindiesse, y no se hiziesse matar, y que se le haria buen tratamiento, el munca quiso, y al fin mandaron a un geniçaro, que le tirasse un arcabuzazo por meitad del cuerpo, y lo hizo, todauia el conde se tuno en pies llamando a los otros perros, y que se le allegassen, luego le tiraron otro arcabuzazo por el cuerpo y otro en la cabeca, desta manera cayo; y llegaron y se la cortaron y la lleuaron al turco, el qual como la vio, pregunto sy era la del conde, y assegurandole que sy, dixole: Corbato, corbato, muchas vezes te hauia instado para que me entregasses la plaça y no quisiste, agora me la has dexado y tu cabeça tambien. Todauia teniendo la velentia del conde, en lo que era razon, mando traer un tafetan amarillo, que se puso sobre la cara del muerto y que la emboliuessen en un tercio pelo negro, y desta manera pusieron una alhombra en tierra y la cabeca en ella, despues que huuo estado ally un dia la embiaron al baxa de Buda, el qual la embio embuelta en un tafetan carmessy al conde de Salma, que estaua en Comar y el domingo quinze viniendo toda la gente de Comar a juntarse con este campo delante Jauerin, la pusieron en un coche cubierto de negro con un tercio pelo negro y una cruz blanca, y assy delante el escuadron de los ungaros venia el coche hasta la puerta del lugar, y hauia mandado el emperador que hiziessen parar el coche en el campo, y que todos los señores le acompañassen con achas hasta la yglesia y saliesse la clerezia. Uno de los principals ungaros, que es herege, entretanto que el emperador remiraua los esquadrones de la gente, que venia dio priessa al coche, y llego a la puerta de yglesia sin ninguna cerimonia ny acompanamiento. Y cierto era lastima ver todos los ungaros como llorauan este muerto, que valerosamente se hauia hauido en todos los assaltos y señaladamente, en el de 29. de Agosto, que todos los geniçaros dieron, y a los 30. todos los spays, y 31. todo el campo, y en este ultimo de los siete tambien se señalo, y andaua vestido de los mas galanes vestidos que tenia de tela de plata y muchos adreços; del cuerpo no se sabe lo que se ha hecho, mas de que por sacarle unos braçaletes de oro le cortaron las manos. — — Szigetvár még mindig tartja magát, de a szultán addig el nem mozdul onnét, a míg be nem veszi, bárha a Budán, Esztergomon, Székesfehérváron inneni végvárait mind el is kellene veszítenie. Nem sokkal azután, hogy értésünkre esett, hogy a törökök tizenöt sikertelen rohamot intéztek Szigetvár ellen és falait ágyúval annyira összetörték, hogy (a szultán emeltette) mesterséges töltésről a vár egész belsejét látni lehetett s alig maradt benne több öt-hatszáz embernél és hogy Zrínyi gróf elfogván a jancsáragát az ellenség szeme láttára karóba húzatta s miután a szultán ugyanakkor felszólította, hogy adja meg magát: — e hó 7-én ujabban három óra hosszáig tartó általános roha-mot intéztek a vár ellen s a várőrség nem tudván többé megakadályozni az ellenség benyomulását legyőzetett s kardra hányatott, egyedül Zrínyi gróf maradt életben, ki folyton harczolva egy kis ajtó-nyilásba vonta meg magát, hol senki sem merte megközelíteni, jóllehet kardjánál egyéb nem volt a kezében. A szultán azt izente neki, hogy adja meg és ne ölesse meg magát, jól bánnak vele, a mit ő megtagadván egy jancsárnak megparancsolták, hogy lőjje keresztül. Erre a lövésre a gróf állva maradt s oda kiáltott a többi kutyának, hogy jöjjenek közelébb, mire ujabb két lövéssel mellbe és fejbe találták s összerogyott. Ekkor hozzámenvén föl-emelték s a szultán elé vitték, a ki meglátván azt kérdezte : valljon ő volna-e a gróf? — miről megbizonyosodván így szólt: Horvát, horvát, sokszor kértelek, hogy add fel a várat s te vonakodtál, ime most fejeddel együtt átadtad. Mindazonáltal tekintettel a gróf vitézségére, a mint illett is, világos sárga tafotát hozatott elő, melyet a halott arczára terítettek és azt fekete bársonynyal letakarták s fejével együtt egy szőnyegre a földre helyezték ; s miután egy napon keresztül így tartották, (fejét) a budai pasának küldöttek, ki azt karmazsin tafotába göngyölve Salm grófnak Komáromba küldé. Vasárnap (sept.) 15-én az egész komáromi őrség a Győr alatti táborba jött, fehér kereszttel díszített fekete bársonynyal bevont kocsin hozván (fejét) elől egy század magyar lovassal a város kapujáig. A császár parancsára a kocsi megállott a táborban, hogy az összes urak kíséretében vigyék a koporsót a templomba kivonulván a papság is. Egy magyar protestáns főúr, mialatt a császár a kocsival jött lovasszázadot megszemlélte, minden szertartás és kiséret nélkül szintén a templomba lépett. Bizonyára minden magyar siratja a halottat, ki az egész ostrom alatt oly vitézül viselte magát, különösen aug. 29-én mikor az összes jancsársággal, 30-án mikor az összes spahikkal, 31-én mikor az egész táborral s végűi (sept.) 7-én, mikor ismét az egész táborral állott szemben s mindig ezüsttel átszőtt és számos ékszerrel díszített ruhába volt öltözve. Testével nem tudni mi történt, azonkívül, hogy arany karpereczeitől megfoszthassák, kezeit levágták. Szigetvár utolsó ostromában Aliportug is elesett, a ki rhodusi szandsák volt s a mult évben
